"Nirvana Unplugged in New York" is a live album by the American grunge band Nirvana, recorded during their MTV Unplugged performance in November 1993. The performance was filmed in front of a small audience at Sony Music Studios in New York City and aired on MTV in December of that year.
The album features stripped-down versions of some of Nirvana's best-known songs, including "Come As You Are," "Polly," and "All Apologies," as well as covers of songs by artists such as David Bowie and Lead Belly. The stripped-down acoustic arrangements highlight the raw emotion and songwriting prowess of Kurt Cobain, the band's frontman and songwriter.
Released in November 1994, the album was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and earning a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 1996. "Unplugged in New York" is widely regarded as one of the greatest live albums of all time and a defining moment in the career of Nirvana.
