Spin Notes #2 - Gregory Porter

Spin Notes #2 - Gregory Porter

Gregory Porter (born Nov 4, 1971) sang at an early age in church, where his mother Ruth served as a minister. In his junior year of college at San Diego State, a shoulder injury halted his football career, and refocused his plans
on pursuing singing professionally.

Porter performed in Brooklyn and Harlem in the early 2000s, shaping and honing his skillset which would be on display in Water, his debut 2010 album. His second album Be Good (2012)–the album featured in this Spin Notes–was followed by Liquid Spirit (2013), winner of the 2014 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

As a baritone singer with a resonating and musical voice, his style can be defined as a successful blend of Blues, Soul, Jazz, and Gospel. His music features the energy and panache of a live church band, with top musicianship
and authentic spirit.

Porter has achieved great commercial success in the jazz genre, which rarely occurs. Enjoy this excerpt of "Painted on Canvas" from Be Good, played on Spinbase and captured with high-quality microphones
